## Procedure steps

### 1. Checking the order and assessing the patient

The nurse reviews the written order: which solution or medicine, by which route, at what rate, for how long, and what must be monitored. The patient is assessed before starting: vital signs, hydration status, heart and kidney disease, drug allergies, and how any previous infusion went. Any ambiguity in the order stops the procedure until the physician clarifies it.

### 2. Preparing the solution and line aseptically

Hands are cleaned and gloves worn; the solution's expiry, container integrity and clarity are checked and it is inspected for particles; a sterile single-use giving set is connected and primed to clear the air. Only sealed, previously unopened supplies are used, and no cannula, line or leftover solution is ever reused for another patient under any circumstances.

### 3. Inserting the intravenous cannula

A suitable vein is chosen away from joints and away from an arm with a fistula, lymph-node clearance or impaired movement; the skin is disinfected and left to dry; then an appropriately sized cannula is inserted and secured with a transparent dressing that keeps the site visible. The insertion date is recorded, because a cannula has a limited dwell time and must be changed on schedule.

### 4. Starting the infusion and setting the rate

The infusion starts at exactly the rate written in the order and no faster, and its first minutes are watched closely because most severe reactions appear early. The patient is asked about itching, breathlessness, dizziness or pain at the cannula site, and the infusion is stopped at once if any of these occur, with the physician contacted before anything is resumed.

### 5. Monitoring, finishing and documentation

The patient and the cannula site are watched throughout for swelling, redness or coolness suggesting leakage, and vital signs and fluid balance are tracked in people with heart or kidney disease. When the infusion finishes, the line is removed or flushed as ordered, and everything is documented alongside written instructions and the timing of the next dose.

## About this service

Intravenous therapy delivers fluids, medicines, minerals or nutrients straight into the bloodstream through a fine tube secured in a peripheral vein or through a central line, when the intravenous route is genuinely necessary: dehydration that drinking cannot correct, a drug that is not absorbed by mouth, an inability to swallow, or the need for a rapid and controlled effect. That decision belongs to a physician and is carried out \*\*on a written order with a care plan\*\* specifying the solution, the rate, the duration and the monitoring required.

The limits of this treatment need saying plainly. Intravenous fluids are not a general tonic, they do not treat fatigue whose cause has never been investigated, they do not build immunity, and they do not replace drinking for someone who is able to drink. Replacing a mineral such as iron follows proof of deficiency on testing and an understanding of its cause, because iron deficiency is a symptom rather than a disease: giving it without looking for a source of blood loss or malabsorption can mask a serious problem. Nor does every deficiency need a vein; many are corrected by mouth with less risk.

Intravenous therapy carries real risks the patient should know about: inflammation of the vein and leakage of fluid into the surrounding tissue, fluid overload in people with heart or kidney disease, and allergic reactions that can be severe, particularly with a first dose of a new medicine or of iron preparations, which is why a first dose is best given somewhere equipped for resuscitation and monitoring. \*\*Strict asepsis is what prevents the most dangerous complication, bloodstream infection or sepsis\*\*, since any contamination of the cannula or infusion line opens a direct route into the blood.

A licensed nurse inserts the cannula, sets the rate, monitors, documents and stops the infusion at the first worrying sign, but \*\*does not diagnose, does not change a dose and does not speed up an infusion\*\* to shorten the visit. Because Jordan's home-care market includes unqualified providers, \*\*verify the licence of the nurse and of the centre or company\*\* before allowing any infusion at home, and never accept drips given without a physician's prescription and a written record.

## Preparation

Bring your prescription and any recent laboratory results if the aim is to correct a deficiency, because replacement rests on a proven result and not on a feeling of tiredness. Tell the nurse every medicine and supplement you take, any previous drug allergy and what exactly happened, and about heart, kidney or liver disease, since these determine how much fluid is safe, as well as pregnancy or breastfeeding. Mention a dialysis fistula, previous lymph-node surgery or weakness in one arm, as these rule that arm out. Eat a light meal and drink water beforehand if your physician allows, since veins are then easier to access, and wear loose sleeves. Do not fast for long periods without instructions, and empty your bladder before starting. \*\*Do not accept any infusion at home before verifying the nurse's licence and the licence of the centre or company\*\*, and ask for the name of the solution, its rate and the start time to be written in a record you keep.

## Aftercare

Stay under observation after the infusion finishes for as long as the nurse specifies, especially after a first dose of a new medicine. If a cannula stays in your arm between doses, keep its dressing clean and dry, do not fiddle with it or flush it yourself, do not shower with it uncovered, and remind the nurse of its insertion date at every visit, since it has a limited dwell time. Drink fluids as your physician allows, and note any symptoms that appeared after the session so you can report them. Urine colour may change after some treatments and then returns to normal. Seek care immediately if you develop: \*\*difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or a spreading rash\*\*, \*\*high fever, chills or shivering after the infusion\*\*, \*\*any change in level of consciousness\*\*, \*\*swelling, redness, pain or a red streak spreading above the cannula site\*\*, \*\*bleeding from the cannula site or from any tube\*\*, \*\*breathlessness with swollen legs or a marked drop in urine output\*\*. These signs mean \*\*urgent contact or emergency care, not waiting for the next session\*\*.
