## Depression and anxiety assessment: what to expect

Assessment explores symptoms, duration and effects on sleep, work and relationships. An online questionnaire alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

The clinician discusses health history, medicines and stressors and may investigate physical explanations for some symptoms. Rating scales can support assessment and follow-up but do not replace the consultation.

Describe your experience in your own words and ask for the plan to be explained. Immediate danger of self-harm requires emergency support rather than waiting for an appointment.
