## Procedure steps

### 1. Assessing safety and scale first

The first questions concern harm that has actually happened: has anyone been injured, was any sharp object used, is anyone at home afraid of the child? An immediate safety plan protects younger siblings and the child themselves before any long-term behavioural work begins.

### 2. Functional analysis of the aggression

What precedes and follows each incident is mapped: does the child obtain something, escape a difficult task, gain attention, or defend themselves? Aggression whose function is escaping schoolwork is treated quite differently from defensive aggression.

### 3. Looking for hidden drivers

Sleep, pain, hearing, language development, exposure to bullying or to scenes of violence are all reviewed, along with screens and their content. Many cases improve once the hidden driver is addressed instead of chasing the visible behaviour alone.

### 4. Teaching the alternative and coaching parents

The child is taught an alternative that achieves the same goal without aggression: asking for help, saying "stop", walking away, or a safe physical outlet. Parents are coached in a calm, pre-announced logical consequence and in reinforcing the alternative the moment it appears.

### 5. School coordination and follow-up

The plan is unified with the teacher and school counsellor, since aggression is measured in the playground more than in the clinic, and progress is tracked as weekly incident count and severity. A broader assessment follows if severity persists, or if deliberate cruelty or cruelty to animals appears.

## About this service

Managing aggressive child behaviour is an assessment and behavioural training programme run by a child mental health specialist for a child who hits, bites, pushes, damages property, or threatens peers and siblings. It does not begin with punishment but with diagnostic questions: who is the aggression directed at, when did it start, is it an explosive reaction to frustration or cold and planned, and does it happen only at home or at school as well? The answers change the whole plan.

In most childhood cases aggression is \*\*a message, not defiance and not malice\*\*: a child with no words for anger, a child copying a model they watch, a child being bullied who defends themselves the only way they know, a child in pain or short of sleep or delayed in language, or a child who has discovered that hitting is the quickest route to the toy. \*\*Seeing a specialist is not a stigma and not a parenting failure\*\*; coming early is precisely what stops the behaviour hardening into a pattern that follows the child into school and adolescence.

The programme's limits must be stated plainly. It does not change a child's temperament and will not make them placid in every situation, and it does not remove their right to feel angry or to protect themselves; the aim is to replace the aggressive act with an effective, safe alternative. It also does not replace a wider assessment when aggression is a mask for something else — bullying the child is experiencing, a hearing or language problem, physical pain, or violence the child witnesses at home or on a screen. \*\*A stubborn myth needs correcting: hitting is not cured by hitting. A child hit to stop them hitting learns that the strongest imposes their will, so they settle in front of you and attack where you cannot see\*\* — shouting and labelling a child "the violent one" work exactly the same way.

Family and school are core to treatment, not just the child's transport: outcomes depend on one unified response at home, in class and in the playground, and on reviewing the violence the child sees around them. Assessment is built on information from \*\*more than one source\*\* — parents, teacher, direct observation and an incident log — never a single session, because a child who is aggressive in only one setting is a fundamentally different case from one who is aggressive everywhere. \*\*Be wary of any centre promising a fast cure or a "permanent end" to aggression, or a programme that does not publish the qualifications of whoever delivers it.\*\*

## Preparation

Before the appointment, write a factual record of the last five incidents: the date, who it was directed at, what happened in the minutes before, exactly what the child did, what adults did afterwards, and whether anyone was hurt. Do not soften the description; the specialist needs the real picture, not a polite one. Ask the teacher or school counsellor for a written note about behaviour in class and in the playground and who the conflicts involve — a second source often changes the assessment. Bring paediatric reports and any hearing, speech or developmental report, and list any medicine the child currently takes without changing it yourself. Review calmly and honestly the violence the child sees around them: heated conflict at home, physical punishment, violent games or clips. Tell your child you are visiting someone who helps children when anger grows bigger than they are; never present it as a punishment or let them feel they are being taken to trial.

## Aftercare

Hold to the safety plan first: the child is not left unsupervised with a younger sibling until things stabilise, and objects that could be used to injure are put out of reach. Then apply the same unified response at home and at school for weeks without wavering; inconsistency between adults is the single biggest reason plans fail. Praise the alternative clearly the moment it appears — "you asked for help instead of hitting, that is what we want" — and do not withdraw that praise because a later incident occurs. Do not use physical punishment, shouting, or the label "aggressive" in front of others, and do not force a hollow apology: apologising is trained, not extracted. Log incidents weekly so you can see the trend. \*\*Ask for urgent help now, not an appointment weeks away, if the child talks about hurting themselves or wanting to die, uses a sharp object or fire, genuinely injures someone, is cruel to an animal, withdraws severely and stops eating and sleeping, or shows a sudden collapse in functioning and activity.\*\* \*\*Any sign that the child themselves is being abused or subjected to violence — at home, at school, or by anyone — requires immediate protective action, not waiting for the next session.\*\*
