## Procedure steps

### 1. Mapping present and missing skills

The child is observed in real or guided interaction, and parents and teacher are asked about behaviour at break, on family visits and at gatherings. The aim is a concrete list: what the child does well, what exactly is missing, and where attempts usually break down.

### 2. Ruling out barriers to interaction

Hearing, speech and language development are reviewed, and social anxiety and any experience of bullying are assessed. A child who hears poorly, cannot find words, or fears ridicule looks withdrawn without being so, and each of these needs a different pathway.

### 3. Setting small measurable goals

One or two skills are chosen at each stage, worded so they can be observed: "asks one classmate a question at break", "waits for a turn twice in a game". Vague goals such as "become sociable" cannot be measured and are never achieved.

### 4. Modelling, role-play and group practice

The specialist models the skill, the child rehearses it in short scenarios, and it is then practised in a small group of similar-aged peers where real disagreement occurs and the skill is used under supervision with immediate feedback.

### 5. Generalisation to real life and follow-up

The skill is carried into the classroom, the neighbourhood and family visits through simple weekly tasks supervised by parents and teacher with light prompting and immediate praise. Progress is counted as successful interactions rather than impressions, and goals are raised gradually.

## About this service

Social skills development is a structured training programme delivered by a child mental health specialist to teach the practical skills every successful interaction is built from: starting a conversation, joining play that is already under way, waiting for a turn, reading facial expressions and tone of voice, listening without interrupting, expressing a need, accepting a refusal, resolving conflict without exploding, and ending an interaction politely. Training usually begins one-to-one and then moves into a small group that resembles real life.

The programme starts from an important premise: difficulty with social contact is usually \*\*a missing skill, not a bad character and not poor parenting\*\*, and troubling behaviour among peers is \*\*a message, not defiance\*\*. The child who stands alone at break, who pushes peers in order to be allowed to play, who interrupts everyone, or who answers in one word and walks away, is not a "problem child" — they are a child who has not yet been taught a skill that is learned much as reading is learned. \*\*Seeing a specialist here is not a stigma and not a parenting failure\*\*; social skills are taught, not waited for.

The limits are explicit. The programme does not change a child's temperament and will not turn a quiet child into the centre of the group, and quiet introversion is not an illness to be cured — a child who is content with one friend does not need fixing. Skills training also does not replace a wider assessment when there are signs of a difference in development or communication, and on its own it does not treat hearing loss, language delay or severe social anxiety; those are assessed and managed on their own pathway. Suitability is decided by clinical assessment and direct observation, never by a symptom list found online.

The most important practical limit: \*\*what is learned in the clinic does not transfer to real life by itself.\*\* Family and school are therefore genuine parts of the treatment: real play opportunities with peers are arranged, parents are coached in gentle prompting and immediate praise, and the teacher agrees on openings inside the classroom and at break. Assessment draws on \*\*more than one source\*\* — parents, teacher, and observation of the child among peers — never a single session. \*\*Be wary of any centre promising to make a child "confident and sociable" within days, or a fast cure or "permanent end" to shyness, or a programme that does not publish its method and the qualifications of whoever delivers it.\*\*

## Preparation

Before the appointment, write a factual account of three recent social situations: what happened exactly, what your child said or did, and how it ended. Identify whether the difficulty lies in starting an interaction, sustaining it, or handling conflict; the distinction changes the training plan. Note whether the behaviour is the same everywhere or differs between home, school and relatives, because that difference is diagnostically important. Ask the teacher for a written note about break times, group work and peer relationships, and ask directly about any bullying or exclusion they have noticed. Bring any previous hearing, speech or developmental report. Do not rehearse ready answers with your child before the session or ask them to "behave well" for the specialist; we need their natural picture. Tell them you are visiting someone who helps children make friends, and never present the visit as a punishment or a test.

## Aftercare

Practise the skill in life, not in conversation about it: arrange short, frequent meetings with one or two children you know, since large or long gatherings defeat the child before they begin. Prompt with a brief whisper before the situation rather than correcting in front of peers, and praise a successful attempt immediately with an exact description: "you asked about his game and waited for the answer — that is friendship." Do not compare your child with a sibling or with classmates, and never call them "shy" in front of others; a label becomes an identity they then act out. Check in with the teacher monthly and log successful interactions so you can see the trend. \*\*Seek help immediately, not an appointment weeks away, if the child talks about hurting themselves or wanting to die, withdraws severely and stops eating and sleeping, suddenly refuses school, shows a sudden collapse in functioning and activity, or loses language or social skills they previously had.\*\* \*\*Any sign of repeated bullying, abuse or violence towards the child requires immediate protective action, not waiting for the next session.\*\*
