## Procedure steps

### 1. Two separate sessions and clear confidentiality limits

The adolescent is seen alone first so they can speak freely, then the parents. Confidentiality limits are explained to both at the outset: what is said stays private except where life is at risk. That clarity is what allows a teenager to speak honestly.

### 2. Risk assessment before anything else

The young person is asked directly and calmly about thoughts of self-harm and death, risky behaviour, bullying, online exploitation or blackmail, and any substance exposure. Asking openly does not plant the idea; it opens a door to help.

### 3. Understanding the need behind the behaviour

The whole context is examined: academic pressure, friendships, body image, conflict at home, sleep, and screen time and its content. The same behaviour may be escape from repeated failure, a search for belonging, or the expression of unspoken distress.

### 4. A mutual behaviour agreement and dialogue skills

A written agreement is drawn up on both sides: commitments the adolescent makes and freedoms they earn, alongside commitments from the parents such as less shouting, no covert searching, and discussion at a calm time. Both sides are coached in emotional regulation and negotiation.

### 5. Follow-up, coordination and referral when needed

Outcomes are tracked against agreed indicators such as school attendance and the weekly number of serious arguments, and the school counsellor is involved with the family's consent. A broader psychological or medical assessment follows if signs of depression, severe anxiety or risk appear.

## About this service

Adolescent guidance and behaviour modification is an assessment and counselling service for a teenager and their family, offered when conflict at home escalates, school performance drops, the young person withdraws from family and friends, limits and rules are repeatedly crossed, anger becomes explosive, arguments over the phone and late nights never end, or risky behaviour appears. It begins with separate sessions — one with the adolescent, one with the parents — because each account alone is incomplete.

At this age difficult behaviour is \*\*a message, not simple defiance\*\*: the adolescent is building an independent identity, testing limits to learn where they stand, and hiding whatever they fear being judged for. Much of the conflict is not a rejection of the family but an indirect request for space and respect. \*\*Seeing a specialist is not a stigma and not a parenting failure\*\*, and it does not mean your child has "lost all manners"; turning to it early is precisely what stops a passing conflict from hardening into years of estrangement.

The limits must be said openly to both sides. The specialist is not an enforcement arm for parents and not a court passing judgment on the adolescent, and sessions do not manufacture an obedient teenager who complies without question — blind obedience is not a healthy goal at this age. The work also fails if the young person is dragged in to be told off in front of a stranger. That is why confidentiality is explained in the first session: what the adolescent says stays between them and the specialist, except where there is real danger to their life or someone else's, which is shared in order to protect them. Counselling likewise does not replace broader medical or psychological assessment when that is needed.

\*\*One reassuring but dangerous myth needs correcting: not every change is "a phase that will pass". A sudden collapse in school performance, sharp withdrawal from friends, changes in sleep and appetite, and loss of interest in everything once enjoyed are not ordinary adolescence and must not be waited out.\*\* The family is part of the treatment: outcomes depend on parents changing their share of the interaction and on follow-through at home and school, and assessment draws on \*\*more than one source\*\* — the adolescent, the parents and the school — never a single session. \*\*Be wary of any centre promising rapid behaviour change or a "permanent end" to defiance, or harsh discipline programmes and camps that do not publish their method and the qualifications of their staff.\*\*

## Preparation

Before the appointment, agree with your son or daughter that they are coming to an opportunity, not a punishment, and say plainly: "we will both be heard and nobody is putting you on trial." Never threaten them with the session or describe it as being "to fix you". Write your own short list of the three most specific problems with examples and dates rather than general traits such as "he has become defiant"; a plan can be built on examples, not on labels. Add practical information: sleep hours, school attendance, changes in friendships, changes in eating or weight, screen time, and any worrying incident or substance exposure. Bring school reports and any medical reports, plus the names of any medicines being taken, without changing them yourself. Allow the adolescent a session alone and do not insist on hearing everything said; confidentiality is a condition of success, and its limit is danger to life, which is reported at once.

## Aftercare

Deliver your side of the agreement before demanding theirs; adolescents measure a family's sincerity by what they see, not by what they are told. Choose a calm moment for discussion rather than the peak of anger, ask more than you lecture, respect the privacy that was agreed, and avoid covertly searching the phone — it ends trust, does not replace conversation, and protects nobody on its own. Keep sleep routines stable and hold on to one shared family meal, because sleep and daily connection are the strongest protection at this age. Review the agreed indicators weekly, without comparisons to siblings and without dragging up the past at every disagreement. \*\*Ask for urgent help now, not an appointment weeks away, if they talk about hurting themselves or wanting to die, write about it or search for it, say goodbye to someone or give their belongings away, withdraw severely and stop eating and sleeping, show a sudden collapse in performance and attendance, or if cuts or marks appear on their body.\*\* \*\*Any sign of abuse, violence, exploitation or online blackmail requires immediate protective action, not waiting for the next session.\*\*
