## Procedure steps

### 1. Excluding other causes first

Before any emotional label, hearing and vision are checked, an undetected learning difficulty or attention disorder is looked for, and questions cover sleep, pain, medication, and seizures. Bullying, family crises, bereavement, violence, and abuse are asked about carefully and professionally, because ignoring these causes produces a plan that treats the surface and leaves the wound.

### 2. Functional behaviour assessment and data collection

The child is observed in class and at home, and what precedes and follows the behaviour is recorded along with its frequency, duration, and intensity, so its function emerges: escape from a task, seeking attention, obtaining something, or regulating an internal state. Emotional measures and questionnaires from parents and teachers are collected, and a numerical baseline is built before any intervention.

### 3. Building a written positive behaviour support plan

A three-part plan is written: preventive adjustments to environment and tasks that reduce triggers, teaching a replacement skill that serves the behaviour's function acceptably such as requesting a break or naming anger in words, and a clear reinforcement system. A written escalation protocol that keeps everyone safe is added, with measurable goals and review dates.

### 4. Training family and teachers for one consistent approach

Parents and teachers are trained in the same plan word for word, in calm consistent responses instead of shouting and punishment, and in recognising early escalation signals and intervening before an outburst. They also learn what not to do: bargaining during escalation, threatening, comparing him with classmates, and exposing the child in front of his class.

### 5. Regular review and collaboration with mental health services

Data are compared with the baseline at agreed intervals to judge the plan's value, adjustments are made as needed, and setbacks are documented as part of the course. The case is referred to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist when symptoms warrant it, and work is coordinated with them without waiting for the situation to deteriorate.

## About this service

Emotional impairment is an educational term for a persistent emotional and behavioural pattern that obstructs a child's learning and relationships and is not explained by low intellectual ability, sensory loss, or physical illness. Three conditions distinguish it from passing behaviour: it is marked in degree, it lasts a long period rather than days, and it appears in more than one setting rather than only at home or only with one teacher. Its presentations include withdrawal, mutism, pathological fear and mood swings, aggression and constant opposition, self-injury, and school refusal.

The specialist's first task is not to modify behaviour but to explain it. What looks like misbehaviour may be a reaction to an undetected learning difficulty that makes the child escape a task he cannot do, to bullying nobody knows about, to a family crisis, bereavement, violence, or abuse, to unrecognised hearing or vision loss, or to physical pain or lack of sleep. \*\*Behaviour is always a function, never a personal quarrel:\*\* it is an attempt to obtain something, to escape something, or to regulate an internal state, and identifying that function is what makes a plan work.

A deeply rooted myth must be corrected: \*\*punishment, humiliation, shouting, and hitting do not teach a child an alternative; they stop the behaviour momentarily, then increase it and destroy the child's trust in the person teaching him.\*\* The alternative is teaching a replacement skill that serves the same function acceptably, modifying what provokes the behaviour in the environment, reinforcing correct attempts, and having a written, agreed procedure for escalation that keeps the child and those around him safe.

\*\*Early intervention changes the trajectory\*\* here more than almost anywhere else, because years of academic failure and social isolation turn a modifiable problem into an identity the child adopts about himself. \*\*The family and the school are part of the plan, not recipients of it:\*\* one plan is applied at home and in the classroom in the same way, and a contradiction between leniency in one place and harshness in another keeps the behaviour alive.

\*\*Progress is measured against individual written goals for this child — such as fewer escalation episodes or more minutes on task — not by comparison with classmates and not by an expectation that he will become like the other children.\*\* Behaviour is recorded in numbers before and after the plan so its value can be judged.

\*\*The limits are explicit: an educational programme does not cure a psychiatric disorder, does not replace assessment by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist where symptoms call for it, does not prescribe or adjust medication, and does not remove the family's own need for support.\*\* Progress is usually uneven with setbacks, and that is a normal part of the course rather than failure of the plan. \*\*Be wary of any programme promising a cure or control of your child's behaviour within weeks, relying on fear, isolation, or confinement, or refusing to have its impact measured in written figures.\*\* Eligibility is determined by specialist assessment, not by one teacher's complaint or an online test.

## Preparation

Before the appointment write a realistic rather than summarised description: exactly what the behaviour is, when it happens and at what time of day, how often each week, what precedes it and what follows, and how the people around him respond. Record whether it appears at home and school together or in only one setting, because that changes the assessment. Bring school reports, any previous psychological or educational assessment, hearing and vision reports, and a full list of medicines. Tell the specialist honestly about any family crisis, bereavement, divorce, relocation, violence, bullying, or major change in the child's life, because withholding this produces the wrong plan. Mention sleep problems, pain, or seizures if present, and what you have already tried and its outcome, including punishment if it was used. Do not threaten your child with the visit or describe it as a disciplinary measure; present it as help, and discuss your expectations openly, since progress is gradual and includes setbacks.

## Aftercare

Apply the plan exactly and consistently at home as it is applied at school, because inconsistency between the two is what most often defeats it, and do not modify it yourself; discuss any change with the specialist. Record the behaviour in numbers each week and bring the record to reviews, since it is what proves value or triggers change. Maintain regular sleep, a clear routine, and daily positive time with the child with no conditions attached, avoid shouting, physical punishment, threats, and comparison with siblings, and remember that escalation is not a personal challenge to you. Look after yourself and seek family support, because exhausted parents defeat the best plan. Expect setbacks around examinations, holidays, and transitions, and compare your child with his own written figures rather than his classmates. \*\*Seek help immediately for any talk of death or suicide, a plan to harm himself, or giving away his belongings, for escalating self-injury, threats to harm others, hearing voices or loss of contact with reality, complete withdrawal with refusal of food and sleep, signs of harm or neglect, or substance use.\*\* \*\*Be wary of any programme promising a fast cure or relying on fear and confinement.\*\*
