## About this service

Internal haemorrhoids are enlarged vessels inside the anal canal and may cause bleeding or prolapse. Rectal bleeding should not automatically be attributed to haemorrhoids.

## Internal haemorrhoids: assessment and treatment options

Internal haemorrhoids are enlarged vessels inside the anal canal and may cause bleeding or prolapse. Rectal bleeding should not automatically be attributed to haemorrhoids.

Assessment establishes the symptoms and extent. Care may start with constipation management or include banding and other procedures; surgery is considered for selected cases.

The choice depends on examination and symptom severity. Heavy or persistent bleeding or feeling seriously unwell requires urgent assessment, rather than repeated treatment without a diagnosis.
