## About this service

Albinism is an inherited reduction in melanin that can affect skin, hair and eyes. It differs from acquired vitiligo, although everyday terminology can confuse the two.

## المهق أو البرص الوراثي: العناية بالجلد والبصر

المقصود هنا بالمهق نقص وراثي في الميلانين قد يؤثر في الجلد والشعر والعينين. وهو يختلف عن البهاق المكتسب، رغم التباس بعض الأسماء الشائعة.

تركز الرعاية على فحص البصر ودعمه والحماية من الشمس، وقد تُناقش الاستشارة الوراثية. تختلف الاحتياجات حسب نوع المهق وتأثيره في الرؤية.

## Albinism: skin protection and vision support

Albinism is an inherited reduction in melanin that can affect skin, hair and eyes. It differs from acquired vitiligo, although everyday terminology can confuse the two.

Care focuses on vision assessment and support, sun protection and sometimes genetic counselling. Needs depend on the type of albinism and its effect on eyesight.

A cosmetic procedure should not promise to restore pigment or cure albinism. Newly appearing pale patches need a skin diagnosis rather than an assumption of albinism.
