Learning disorders treatment

## Procedure steps

### 1. Ruling out medical and sensory causes

The clinician takes a detailed history of pregnancy, birth, development, language, sleep and behaviour, requests up-to-date hearing and vision testing, and asks about school absence, chronic illness and seizures, because hearing loss, visual problems or inattention can produce a picture identical to a learning disorder.

### 2. Standardised psycho-educational assessment

A structured evaluation covers general ability, academic skills, working memory, phonological awareness and naming speed, comparing the child with peers of the same age and grade in order to name the difficulty precisely: reading, written expression and spelling, arithmetic, or a combination.

### 3. Individual education plan

A written plan is drafted with measurable goals, a timeline and review tools, together with the accommodations needed in class and in examinations. It is shared with the school and the family in plain language so that everyone pulls in the same direction.

### 4. Intervention sessions and parent coaching

Specialist sessions use explicit, sequential, multisensory teaching, while parents are coached in short regular home exercises and in reducing conflict around homework, because clinic sessions alone cannot succeed without calm daily repetition at home.

### 5. Progress monitoring and plan revision

Progress is measured with objective tools, samples of the child's work and teacher reports. Goals or methods are revised when progress falls short, and the diagnosis itself is revisited if new information emerges, such as marked anxiety or a previously unrecognised attention problem.

## About this service

Specific learning disorders are differences in how the brain processes information that leave a child struggling with one academic skill — reading, writing or arithmetic — while general intellectual ability stays within or above the average range. Treating a learning disorder is therefore not a medicine and not a single session. It is a structured pathway: a diagnostic assessment that names the exact difficulty and its severity, followed by an individual education plan and targeted intervention sessions built on the child's strengths rather than on the child's failures.

Two points matter for families. First, a learning disorder is not low intelligence. Second, it is not laziness on the child's part or neglect on the family's part. A child who reads slowly or reverses letters is not cutting corners; he spends far more effort than his classmates to reach the same result, then tires and gives up, and that fatigue is misread as lack of interest. This is why assessment always begins by excluding conditions that imitate a learning disorder: undetected hearing or vision loss, frequent school absence, attention deficit and hyperactivity, a language delay, or psychological and family stress.

The limits of the programme should be stated plainly. Educational intervention does not erase the underlying difficulty; it builds skills and compensatory routes so the child can learn effectively. It will not turn a child into the top of the class. It does not replace classroom accommodations such as extra examination time, reduced copying load, or permission to answer orally. And it does not treat a hearing or vision problem if that is the true cause. Be cautious with any centre that promises a complete cure within a fixed number of sessions, or that claims to raise a child's intelligence with a device or a rapid programme; such promises have no scientific basis, and the price is the child's time.

Early diagnosis changes the whole educational trajectory: a child identified in the first grades and given structured support follows a very different path from one left until failure accumulates, school becomes hateful and confidence collapses. Eligibility and the details of any plan are decided by direct clinical and psycho-educational evaluation, never by reading a web page.

## Preparation

Bring school reports, grade sheets and the child's actual unedited notebooks, since these show the pattern of errors better than anything you can describe. Bring any recent hearing or vision report, previous assessment reports, and a list of current medicines. Before the visit, write down when the problem began, which subject is hardest, and how the child behaves at homework time. Choose an appointment when the child is neither tired nor hungry, and not straight after a long school day. Explain to the child that the visit is to understand how he learns and how to help, not an intelligence test and not a punishment for his marks; never use it as a threat. Tell the assessor if the child is being treated for hyperactivity, seizures or a sleep disorder, and whether he studies in a language other than the one spoken at home.

## Aftercare

Keep the session schedule; consistency matters more than the number of sessions. Do home exercises for a few minutes daily rather than one long weekly stretch, and stop a home session before it turns into tears or punishment. Do not compare the child with siblings or classmates, and praise effort and strategy rather than the mark alone. Give the school a copy of the plan and the agreed accommodations, and check in with the teacher regularly. \*\*Seek prompt review if the child's mood deteriorates, he withdraws socially, or he speaks about harming himself\*\*; \*\*if he refuses school outright or reports headaches and stomach aches every morning\*\*; \*\*if a skill he had already mastered is lost\*\*; or \*\*if new difficulty appears in speech, vision or balance, or morning headache with vomiting\*\* — these are not features of a learning disorder and need urgent neurological assessment. Do not pay for any programme promising a complete cure or a guaranteed result within a fixed number of sessions.
