## Procedure steps

### 1. Consultation and planning the shape

The doctor examines the lips, their proportions and symmetry, the teeth and the surrounding skin, listens to what you want, explains what is achievable and what needs a different approach, and selects the gel type suited to your goal.

### 2. Safety checks and documenting the product

Medications, cold-sore history, allergies and pregnancy are reviewed, you are shown the product box and its expiry date, and the product type is recorded in your file — this is your right and should be accepted without hesitation.

### 3. Disinfection and anaesthesia

Make-up is removed and the skin and lips are carefully disinfected, a numbing cream or local anaesthetic is given and allowed to work, then the area is disinfected again before injecting to reduce infection risk.

### 4. Gradual injection with shape assessment

Small amounts are placed with a fine needle or cannula at planned points, using aspiration, slow movement and repeated symmetry checks in the mirror, stopping at the point that preserves the lip's natural proportions.

### 5. Cooling, instructions and review appointment

The lips are gently cooled, aftercare instructions and emergency warning signs are explained, a contact number for urgent problems is given, and a review after two weeks is arranged to assess the settled shape and make any small refinement.

## About this service

Lip filler is a procedure in which a hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the lip tissue or along the lip border to restore lost volume, define the lip outline, improve symmetry between the two sides, or hydrate thin, dry lips. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is broken down gradually, which is why the result is temporary and needs repeating after a period that varies with the type of gel, the area injected and the individual.

The session is performed in the clinic under topical or local anaesthesia, with small amounts injected progressively while the shape is assessed during the work. It is normal for lips to be swollen and slightly uneven in the first days, for bruises or small palpable lumps to appear, and for the final shape to settle after one to two weeks. Judging the result before then leads to hasty decisions and to additional injections that nobody needs.

The limits are explicit. Filler adds volume and defines borders, but it does not lift a drooping upper lip or shorten a long distance between the nose and the lip — that requires a surgical approach. It does not fully erase the radial lines around the mouth, does not correct a smile that shows a lot of gum, and does not fix a dental or jaw problem. Doubling the volume does not produce a better shape; it makes the lip lose its natural proportions.

One dangerous idea must also be corrected: there is no safe permanent lip filler. Injecting permanent or unidentified materials such as liquid silicone into lips is associated with chronic complications that are difficult to repair and cannot be dissolved the way hyaluronic acid can. The most serious immediate complication is blockage of a blood vessel; its warning signs are severe pain out of proportion to the procedure together with blanching or bluish discolouration of the skin, and it is an emergency that must be treated the same day. Suitability is decided by clinical examination — not by a photograph you want to copy.

## Preparation

Tell the doctor about all your medications and supplements, especially anticoagulants, aspirin and supplements that increase bruising, and do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Mention any history of cold sores around the mouth, as preventive treatment may be prescribed beforehand, and any previous reaction to injectables, autoimmune disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Also say whether anything has been injected into your lips before and what it was, particularly if it was permanent or unidentified. Postpone the session if you have a dental infection, an active cold sore or inflammation in the area, and allow at least two weeks before any important event. Avoid alcohol the night before and arrive with clean lips, without lipstick.

## Aftercare

Apply cool compresses gently to the lips in the first hours, do not rub or massage unless your doctor instructs you to, and avoid drinking through a straw or smoking on the first day. Avoid very hot and spicy food and drink for the first day, and avoid lip make-up, strenuous exercise, sauna, steam, alcohol and strong sun for the first two to three days. Use a plain lip balm and sleep on your back on the first night if you can. Swelling, slight asymmetry and bruising are expected, and the final shape settles after one to two weeks, so do not judge it earlier and do not ask for more product. \*\*Call the clinic immediately, the same day, if you develop: severe pain out of proportion to the procedure, blanching of the lip or surrounding skin, a dusky blue or mottled net-like discolouration, pain or pallor at the nose, any change in vision, severe increasing swelling with fever or pus, or painful clustered blisters.\*\* These are not symptoms to wait out.
