## Procedure steps

### 1. Quick eligibility check

The clinician or nurse asks about your age, chronic conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immunosuppressive medicines and any severe reaction to a previous dose, and confirms you are not in an acute febrile illness that would justify postponing.

### 2. Choosing the product and timing

An age-appropriate product is chosen, it is decided whether a child receiving the vaccine for the first time needs two spaced doses, and optimal early-season timing is advised, with a reminder that protection takes about two weeks to develop.

### 3. Administration and observation

The vaccine is injected into the upper-arm muscle — or the thigh in infants — after cleaning the skin. You stay about fifteen minutes for observation, and the injection is given lying down if you are prone to dizziness or fainting.

### 4. Documentation and the annual reminder

The vaccination and its date are recorded in your file, and a certificate is issued if your work or travel requires one. The team reminds you that the vaccine is repeated every season, not given once for life.

### 5. Complementary measures through the season

Measures that work alongside the vaccine rather than instead of it are explained: hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, ventilating indoor spaces, staying home when ill to protect others, and seeking care early if you belong to a high-risk group.

## About this service

The influenza vaccine is a seasonal immunisation given each year to train the immune system to recognise the influenza viruses expected to circulate in the coming season. It is repeated annually for two reasons: the virus changes, and the immunity the vaccine produces fades over months. The commonly used version is an inactivated vaccine injected into the upper-arm muscle; it contains no live virus capable of causing the illness.

The people who need it most are those for whom influenza is a dangerous illness rather than an inconvenience: adults over sixty-five, young children from six months of age, pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, people with heart, lung, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, blood disorders or reduced immunity, people with severe obesity, healthcare workers, residents of care homes, and Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, because crowding raises the chance of transmission. Vaccinating the household around an infant under six months protects that baby, who is too young to be vaccinated.

It is best taken at the start of the season, in autumn, before transmission picks up, because immunity takes about two weeks to build. If you are late, having it mid-season is still better than skipping it, since the season in Jordan usually runs into late winter and early spring.

There are limits worth knowing clearly. The vaccine does not prevent the common cold, COVID-19 or the other respiratory viruses, and you can still catch influenza after having it, though the illness is usually milder with fewer complications. The belief that the vaccine gives you flu is not true: a sore arm, tiredness and a low-grade temperature are a normal immune response that settles within a day or two, not an infection. The vaccine also does not replace hand washing, covering coughs and staying home while unwell.

Vaccination is postponed during an acute illness with a high fever, and it is not given to anyone with a confirmed severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to a vaccine component, nor to infants under six months. Egg allergy usually does not prevent vaccination but it does influence where it is given and how long you are observed. The final decision — product, timing, and whether a child being vaccinated for the first time needs two doses — is made on clinical assessment and a review of your record, not from reading.

## Preparation

Tell the clinician or nurse if you have ever had a severe reaction to a vaccine dose, and whether you are allergic to eggs or to a known vaccine component. List your medicines, particularly blood thinners — which need longer pressure over the injection site — as well as steroids and immunosuppressants. Say if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as vaccination is recommended in pregnancy. Postpone the appointment if you have an acute illness with a high fever; a mild cold without fever usually does not prevent vaccination. Eat and drink before you come, wear a short or loose sleeve, and mention if injections make you dizzy. Bring your immunisation record, and if a child is being vaccinated for the first time, ask how many doses are needed and the interval between them.

## Aftercare

Stay where you are for about fifteen minutes after the injection. Expect soreness or heaviness in the upper arm, and possibly mild redness, tiredness, headache or a low-grade temperature that usually settles within a day or two; move the arm and apply a cold pack. Carry on with your day and work normally, and remember that protection takes about two weeks to develop, so keep up respiratory hygiene meanwhile. \*\*Go to emergency immediately for breathing difficulty, wheeze, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or a widespread itchy rash with dizziness after vaccination.\*\* See your doctor if fever lasts more than three days, if the injection site becomes increasingly swollen and painful, or if you develop weakness or numbness in the limbs. If you later develop respiratory symptoms with fever, do not assume it cannot be influenza simply because you were vaccinated, especially if you are in a high-risk group.
