## Procedure steps

### 1. Checking the senses before interpreting poor attention

Assessment starts by confirming that hearing and vision are intact, because even a mild loss presents as inattention, language delay, and distractibility. Development, sleep, general health, seizures, and the language used at home are asked about, and the child's developmental history is reviewed for indicators that warrant a broader referral.

### 2. Measuring the core skills through observation and play

Joint attention, imitation, time on task, understanding instructions, matching, sorting, concepts, phonological awareness, and fine motor skills are measured through play activities rather than paper tests. How the child handles mistakes, waiting, and moving between activities is observed, and a picture is built of what he genuinely masters.

### 3. Setting the starting point and a few clear goals

The starting point is what the child actually lacks, not what the parents want first, and a small number of measurable goals is chosen that begins at his current level and rises gradually. Parents are shown why attention and imitation come before letters, and that building in the right order is what saves years of struggle later.

### 4. Teaching through structured play in daily situations

Skills are taught in short enjoyable activities repeated daily: sorting spoons and socks, sequencing the steps of handwashing, matching games, shared storybooks with questions, songs that play with word sounds, and dough and tong activities that build hand muscles before the pencil. Time on task is increased gradually and never by force.

### 5. Regular measurement and the decision to move to academics

Data are recorded and reviewed every few weeks against the child's written goals, and it is decided when the foundation is solid enough to move on to early reading and writing skills. If progress stalls despite consistent implementation, senses, language, and development are revisited and a specialist referral is requested rather than repeating the same attempt.

## About this service

Pre-academic skills are the foundation on which later reading, writing, and arithmetic stand; they are not an early version of them. They include joint attention and looking at what is pointed to, imitation, sitting and staying on a task for increasing minutes, understanding and following instructions, matching, sorting, classifying, and sequencing, the concepts of colour, shape, size, and quantity, phonological awareness of the sounds inside words, print awareness and page orientation, number sense, fine motor skills and pencil grip, and waiting for a turn, finishing a task, and working independently for short periods.

\*\*The most misunderstood point in this field is that memorising letters and numbers is not a pre-academic skill.\*\* A child may recite the whole alphabet and count to twenty while being unable to follow a two-step instruction, match two shapes, or stay on a task for two minutes — and that child is not ready, however it looks. Rote recitation deceives parents and delays asking for help.

\*\*Pushing reading and writing early, before the foundation is built, does not accelerate learning; it produces aversion to it.\*\* A child made to write before his grip and motor control are mature fails daily, so he links paper and pencil with failure and refuses them later. And before any judgement about poor concentration, hearing and vision must be tested, because a child who does not hear well looks to everyone like a child who does not pay attention.

\*\*Early intervention clearly changes the trajectory here.\*\* Closing a gap in attention, imitation, or phonological awareness before first grade is far easier than treating reading failure after two years of falling behind. \*\*The family and the school are part of the plan, not recipients of it,\*\* because most of these skills are built in natural daily situations: play, sorting the laundry, sequencing steps while preparing food, shared storybooks, and songs that play with the sounds of words — not on worksheets.

\*\*Progress is measured against individual written goals for this child — increasing time on task from two minutes to five, following a two-step instruction, or matching ten shapes — not by comparison with peers or with a child who reads in kindergarten,\*\* because the normal range at this age is wide and individual differences are large.

\*\*The limits are explicit: the programme builds readiness but does not guarantee later high achievement, does not diagnose a specific learning difficulty at this age nor definitively exclude one, and does not replace speech, hearing, or developmental assessment when there are indications for them.\*\* \*\*Be wary of any programme promising your child will read within a month, promising fast results, or selling certificates and levels for fees, or one that relies on worksheets and memorisation without play.\*\* Eligibility and the starting point are determined by specialist assessment, not by comparing your child with a neighbour's child or by an online test.

## Preparation

Bring hearing and vision test reports, any previous speech or developmental assessment, kindergarten reports if available, and samples of your child's drawings and writing attempts. Before the appointment, write precise observations: how many minutes he stays with an activity he likes and how many with one he does not, whether he follows one-step or two-step instructions, whether he imitates your movements, whether he responds to his name the first time, how he holds a pencil and a spoon, and how he reacts to mistakes. Note how many words he uses and who outside the family understands him, and which languages are spoken at home. Mention any loss of a skill he once had at any time, and any seizures, sleep problems, or repeated ear infections, since these affect hearing and language. Record short videos of him playing. Do not rehearse the assessment tasks with him beforehand. And discuss your expectations: the goal is a solid foundation, not a race against other children.

## Aftercare

Deliver the activities in short, repeated daily situations rather than one long session, because five enjoyable minutes a day is worth more than a forced hour once a week. Read to your child daily, talk with him a great deal, ask open questions, and let him play freely, because play is the work of this stage rather than its luxury. Build his hand muscles with dough, tongs, and cutting before insisting on writing, and do not force him to hold a pencil if he refuses. Do not compare him with peers, siblings, or a child who reads early, and reduce screen time, since it competes with the interaction on which language is built. Keep notes and attend reviews so the goals can be adjusted. \*\*Seek review immediately if he loses a language or social skill he had, repeatedly fails to respond to his name, is not using single words by the age of two, does not point or make eye contact, shows a sudden decline in attention, has a seizure, if you suspect hearing or vision loss, or if he refuses every learning activity intensely and persistently with crying and distress.\*\* \*\*Be wary of any programme promising that your child will read within weeks.\*\*
