Official Holiday Announced in Jordan for Islamic New Year 1448
Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan has decided to suspend work at all ministries, official departments, public institutions, public universities, municipalities, joint services councils, the Greater Amman Municipality, and companies fully owned by the government on Tuesday, June 16, marking the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1448 AH.
The decision comes as Jordan observes one of the official religious occasions in the national calendar, with the Islamic New Year carrying significant religious and historical meaning for Muslims around the world.
The holiday applies to various official state institutions, including public universities, municipalities, government departments, and government-owned companies, as part of the nationwide observance of the occasion.
According to the decision, institutions whose nature of work requires continuity will be exempted, ensuring that essential services continue to operate normally and without interruption.
The Islamic New Year marks the beginning of the Hijri calendar, which is associated with the migration of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, from Mecca to Medina. It is observed annually as an official holiday in Jordan.
