What a dental bridge is and who it suits
A dental bridge is a fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth. It rests on the teeth beside the gap, called abutments. These teeth are shaped and covered with crowns, and the crowns are joined to a false tooth that fills the space. The whole piece is cemented as one unit. You cannot take it out yourself. Only a dentist can remove it.
There are several designs. The choice depends on the teeth, the gums and the bite:
- Conventional bridge: a crowned abutment on each side of the gap. This is the most common design.
- Cantilever bridge: supported on one side only. It is used only when particular conditions are met.
- Resin-bonded bridge: thin wings are bonded to the back of the neighbouring teeth. It removes much less tooth tissue but suits only a limited set of cases.
- Implant-supported bridge: rests on implants rather than natural teeth, so no healthy teeth are cut.
Bridge or implant?
Both replace a missing tooth, and neither is right for everyone.
- Implant: leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched and passes biting forces into the bone. It needs enough healthy bone and usually takes longer from start to finish.
- Bridge: often takes fewer weeks. It is worth weighing when the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings or crowns.
- Removable denture: another option some people consider.
General health, gum health, bone, smoking and personal preference all feed into the decision. Only an examination can show which options are realistic for you.
Signs that call for an examination — and when it is urgent
Book a dental check if you notice any of these:
- A gap from a lost or extracted tooth, especially if chewing has become harder.
- Neighbouring teeth starting to tilt or drift into the space.
- An existing bridge that feels loose, moves, or traps food.
- Pain, sensitivity or a bad taste around an old bridge or crown.
- Gums that bleed or recede around the supporting teeth.
Some signs need care the same day:
- Facial swelling that is spreading.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- A high fever with dental pain or swelling.
If you have any of these, go to an emergency department or call 911 in Jordan. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
How the steps usually go, from examination to follow-up
The platform's general service catalogue describes a typical sequence. It notes that a bridge usually takes two to three visits over two to four weeks. The preparation visit lasts roughly 75 to 120 minutes and the fitting about 30 to 60 minutes. Your own plan may differ.
### 1. Examination and assessment of the abutment teeth The dentist checks the gap, the teeth either side, the gums and the bite. X-rays are usually taken to look at the roots and bone. This is also when a bridge, an implant and other options are compared.
### 2. Preparing the mouth and treating the cause Decay, gum disease or an infected tooth should be dealt with first. A supporting tooth sometimes needs root canal treatment before it can carry a crown.
### 3. Preparing the abutments, impression and temporary bridge The supporting teeth are numbed and reshaped so the crowns can fit over them. This removes some tooth structure permanently, so it is worth understanding before you agree. An impression or digital scan is then taken. A temporary bridge protects the teeth while the final one is made.
### 4. Fabrication and try-in The bridge is made to fit. At the try-in, the dentist checks its fit, its colour and how the teeth meet.
### 5. Cementation and learning to clean under the bridge The bridge is cemented and the bite is adjusted. You are then shown how to clean under the false tooth, which an ordinary toothbrush cannot reach.

Questions to ask the dentist before starting
- Is a bridge, an implant or another option realistic in my case, and why?
- Are the neighbouring teeth healthy enough to support a bridge? Do any need treatment first?
- How much of each supporting tooth will be reshaped?
- Which bridge design do you suggest, and what material will be used?
- How many visits will it take, and what happens between them?
- How will I clean under it, and which tools should I use?
- What should I do if the bridge loosens or a supporting tooth becomes sensitive?
- What will the full plan cost? The cost depends on the examination and plan, so ask before starting.
Aftercare and realistic expectations
Some sensitivity in the supporting teeth and a period of getting used to the new bite are common in the first days. Tell the dentist if the bite feels high, or if pain or sensitivity does not settle.
Cleaning under the bridge
Food and plaque collect under the false tooth and around the crown edges. Decay or gum disease in the supporting teeth is a common reason bridges run into trouble.
- Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean under the bridge every day. Floss threaders, special bridge floss or interdental brushes can help, as can a water flosser.
- Keep regular check-ups so the dentist can examine the supporting teeth and gums.
- Avoid biting very hard objects on the bridge.
How long a bridge lasts varies from person to person. It depends largely on cleaning, gum health, bite forces and the condition of the supporting teeth. No clinic can promise a set lifespan.
