What are the available treatment options for cervical cancer?

ClinicsJo Editorial Teamاقرأ بالعربية3 views

Several treatment options are available for cervical cancer. The most appropriate treatment plan depends on factors such as the stage of the cancer, tumor size, extent of spread, the patient's general health, and her future fertility desires. Treatment may involve a single method or a combination of different methods to increase effectiveness [1].

Surgery as a Treatment Option for Cervical Cancer

Surgery is a primary option for removing cancerous tissues, especially in the early stages of cervical cancer. In some very early cases, cancer can be treated by removing or destroying cancerous or pre-cancerous tissues without the need to remove the uterus entirely, which may preserve a woman's ability to conceive [2]. Surgical procedures that may be used in these cases include:

  • Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP): Uses an electrical current to remove abnormal tissue [2].
  • Cold Knife Cone Biopsy: Uses a scalpel to remove a cone-shaped piece of the cervix containing abnormal tissue [2].
  • Cryotherapy: Freezes abnormal cells to destroy them [2].
  • Laser Therapy: Uses laser light to burn away abnormal tissue [2].

For more advanced cases, surgery may involve a radical hysterectomy, which includes removing the uterus and most surrounding tissues, including lymph nodes and the upper part of the vagina [2]. In very rare and advanced cases, a total pelvic exenteration may be performed, which is an extensive surgical procedure to remove all pelvic organs.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing. Radiation can be delivered from a machine outside the body, or a radioactive substance can be placed inside the body near the cancer [1]. Radiation therapy is often used with low-dose chemotherapy for cases where the tumor is too large to be surgically removed, or when the patient is not a good candidate for surgery [2].

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy relies on special medications to shrink or kill cancer cells. The medications can be administered orally in pill form or intravenously [1]. Chemotherapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery or radiation therapy [2].

Targeted and Immunotherapies

These treatments are modern options that target specific aspects of cancer cells or boost the immune system's response to fight cancer:

  • Targeted Therapy: Uses specific drugs to block the growth and spread of cancer cells [1].
  • Immunotherapy: Helps the body's immune system fight cancer cells [1].

Important Considerations When Choosing Treatment

It is essential to discuss all treatment options with the specialized healthcare team. Doctors will work to determine the most appropriate plan based on a comprehensive assessment of the individual case, including cancer stage, tumor size, extent of spread, general patient health, and any future fertility desires [1].
