How often should I replace my toothbrush?

Quick answer

Replace a toothbrush about every three to four months, or sooner if its bristles are frayed or worn. There is no general rule requiring everyone to replace it after every cold.

Check wear as well as the calendar

A worn brush cleans less effectively. Examine the head and choose soft bristles and a comfortable design. Replace worn electric brush heads too, following the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Everyday care

Rinse the brush after use, let it air-dry and do not share it. Do not use a microwave or dishwasher to disinfect it because this can cause damage. Finding microbes on a brush does not by itself establish that it causes infection.

After an illness

Replacement after every respiratory infection should not be presented as compulsory for everyone. Follow any individual instructions from your clinician. A new toothbrush does not replace regular brushing and cleaning between teeth.
