Can cranberry prevent recurrent urinary infections or treat a UTI?

Quick answer

Cranberry products may reduce recurrent UTIs in some women, but do not treat an existing infection or benefit every group equally. Products differ, so capsules are not automatically superior to juice and there is no universal product dose.

Separate prevention from treatment

For repeated infections, discuss confirmation of the diagnosis, contributing factors and preventive choices. Active constituents and processing vary across juices and supplements; juice may also contain added sugar.

Know when to seek care

Burning and frequent urination warrant medical advice. Fever, chills, flank pain or vomiting may indicate kidney infection and require urgent care. Do not postpone assessment of urinary symptoms during pregnancy while trying cranberry.

Check safety

Ask a pharmacist about supplements if taking warfarin or other medicines. Continue prescribed antibiotics as directed. Feeling better after drinking juice does not prove that bacteria have been eliminated.
