Is facial laser treatment safe for every skin type?

Quick answer

Laser treatment can help selected skin concerns, but is not suitable for everyone or risk-free. Safety depends on diagnosis, skin tone, device settings and practitioner expertise. Burns, pigment changes or scarring can occur, so darker skin requires careful planning.

Details

Start with the diagnosis

Scar treatment differs from hair removal or pigment treatment. A device’s brand alone does not identify the best option, and intense pulsed light is not the same technology as a laser. Ask about goals, sessions and recovery instead of expecting perfect skin after one visit.

What should the clinician know?

Report medicines, previous isotretinoin, recent tanning, cold sores and past scarring. The specialist decides whether preparation, postponement or a test spot is appropriate. Do not independently stop prescribed medicines.

Aftercare matters

Follow cleansing, moisturising and sun-protection instructions and do not pick crusts. Promptly report blisters, increasing pain, drainage or spreading redness. Eye symptoms or altered vision after exposure need urgent assessment.
