How can I tell whether my teeth and gums are healthy?

Quick answer

White teeth alone do not establish dental health, and no pain does not rule out early decay. Watch for bleeding, swelling, sensitivity and unusual looseness, and combine home care with dental examinations.

What can I notice at home?

Watch for persistent changes: recurring gum bleeding, swelling, recession, ongoing bad breath or pain when chewing. These warrant assessment but do not identify one diagnosis on their own.

Colour is not a health test

Do not judge oral health only by tooth whiteness or gum colour. Whitening changes appearance; it does not establish whether decay or supporting-tissue disease is present. Early dental problems may also be painless.

What does an examination add?

The dentist checks for decay, examines gums and tooth stability, and may measure gum pockets or request imaging when appropriate. Report symptoms, medicines, long-term conditions and smoking, because these help guide follow-up.
