Why should babies avoid honey, and when can it be introduced?
Do not give honey to babies under 12 months because it may contain spores that cause infant botulism. This includes honey added to water, milk, food or a pacifier. After the first birthday, it remains an added sugar that should be limited.

Is natural honey safer?
Calling honey natural or organic does not remove the risk. Do not rely on home heating to make it appropriate for an infant, and do not use it as a cough remedy or to sweeten feeds in this age group.
If honey was given accidentally
A single exposure does not mean illness will definitely occur. Contact a healthcare professional for advice based on age, amount and the child’s condition. Do not induce vomiting or give a preventive home remedy. Keep the product details and time of exposure.
Symptoms needing attention
Weak sucking or feeding, a weak cry, drooping eyelids, unusual floppiness or breathing difficulty can be important signs. Constipation may also occur, but does not diagnose botulism by itself. Seek urgent assessment for these symptoms and emergency help for breathing difficulty. Do not wait for every sign to appear.
