How many minutes should I walk each day for better health?

Quick answer

For adults, brisk walking can contribute to a weekly target of 150–300 minutes of moderate activity. Thirty minutes on five days is one way to reach the minimum, but sessions can be distributed to suit ability; one step count is not required for everyone.

What counts as brisk?

Brisk walking makes breathing and heart rate increase while still allowing conversation, although singing becomes harder. The appropriate speed differs between people. Steps are useful for tracking habits but do not fully describe intensity or health status.

If you are mostly inactive

Start with short, manageable periods and build duration gradually. Walking to a shop or during a break helps reduce sitting; short walks are not pointless. Include muscle-strengthening activity on two days each week. Balance activities are useful when needed, particularly for older adults.

Adapt the plan

Choose safe routes, suitable footwear and cooler times of day. Discuss activity if you have symptoms on exertion or a condition limiting movement. Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness means stopping and seeking medical help rather than pushing through to reach a daily target.
