What is immediate implant placement, and does it mean a same-day tooth?

Quick answer

Immediate placement means inserting an implant on the day the tooth is extracted. It differs from fitting an immediate temporary crown or loading the implant. Suitability depends on bone, gums, stability and individual risks; it is not the best choice for every patient.

Three separate decisions

The clinician decides when to place the implant, fit a restoration and allow loading. An implant may be placed immediately with a delayed crown, or with a carefully protected temporary crown. Ask what a same-day tooth means in your plan.

How suitability is assessed

Bone and gums are examined with appropriate imaging, alongside infection, smoking and general health. An old infection around a root does not always exclude immediate placement; cleaning, stability and risks need expert assessment. Findings during extraction may change the plan.

Follow-up still matters

Discuss possible bone grafting or delayed placement, costs, maintenance and the final crown. Implants still require cleaning and follow-up.
