How long does clear aligner treatment take, and how are results maintained?

Quick answer

Clear aligner treatment length depends on tooth movements, the bite, response and wear adherence. It may take months or more than a year; a brand name cannot guarantee a timeline. Retainers are needed afterwards as directed to maintain results and limit relapse.

Why timelines differ

Minor crowding differs from a complex bite problem. Planning starts with dental and gum assessment and appropriate images, and refinement stages may be needed. A digital simulation is a planning tool rather than a guaranteed completion date.

Daily adherence

Aligners generally need most-day wear, often about 22 hours as prescribed. Follow the change schedule and do not skip trays to accelerate treatment. Report poor fit or a lost tray, and keep teeth and aligners clean.

After the final tray

Teeth need retention according to the clinician’s instructions; ending active movement does not end follow-up. Discuss retainer type, wearing schedule and replacement cost.
