Can peppermint oil help relieve irritable bowel syndrome?

Quick answer

Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules may relieve pain and some IBS symptoms in adults, but can worsen reflux. Peppermint tea and aromatherapy oil should not be assumed to have the same effectiveness, concentration or dosing.

Choose the right preparation

Studies generally concern capsules made for oral use, not swallowing fragrance or aromatherapy oils. Follow the product leaflet; do not crush or chew a capsule if this disrupts its coating.

Review medicines and symptoms

Indigestion medicines can affect capsule timing or release. Ask a pharmacist for product-specific instructions. Heartburn, nausea or worsening symptoms are reasons to reassess treatment. Children and pregnancy require professional advice.

Confirm the diagnosis

Blood in stool, unexplained weight loss or anaemia should not simply be labelled IBS. Treatment can combine dietary and other approaches selected for the symptom pattern, rather than relying on peppermint alone.
