How often can I donate blood, and how can I protect my iron stores?

Quick answer

The interval depends on the donation type, blood service rules, age, health and iron stores. One schedule does not suit every person or product. Follow the blood bank’s eligibility date and do not donate while unwell or without passing its assessment.

Whole blood differs from platelets

Platelet or plasma donation intervals cannot automatically be applied to whole blood. In Jordan, confirm the requirements of your blood bank; another country’s published schedule is not a local rule. Medicines, travel, illnesses or procedures may require postponement.

Haemoglobin is not the whole iron picture

An acceptable haemoglobin level does not always exclude depleted iron stores. Discuss frequent donation, fatigue or heavy periods with a professional; ferritin testing or a longer interval may be appropriate. Do not start iron supplements without advice or view donation as a general blood-cleansing treatment.

On the day and afterward

Eat and hydrate according to the centre’s advice, and report dizziness. Rest and follow instructions about strenuous activity. Persistent fainting or bleeding needs medical help. Donation screening is not a substitute for evaluating symptoms.
