Can a tooth be saved instead of extracted?

Quick answer

A filling, restoration or root canal followed by an appropriate restoration may save a tooth, depending on damage and support. Veneers do not treat infected pulp, and some teeth cannot be saved.

What guides the decision?

The dentist assesses remaining tooth structure, roots and supporting tissues, sometimes using imaging. Ask about the prospects of retaining the tooth, treatment choices, visits and follow-up.

Options are not interchangeable

Fillings, crowns and root canal treatment serve different purposes. A cosmetic veneer cannot replace infection treatment, and an implant replaces a missing tooth rather than repairs it. A specialist opinion may help when restorability is uncertain, without delaying care for painful or spreading infection.
