A dental panoramic radiograph (OPG) is a single X-ray image that shows both jaws in one view: all erupted and unerupted teeth, the jaw bone, the jaw joints, the lower part of the sinuses, and the relationship between tooth roots and nerve canals. Its limits matter. A panoramic film is a broad survey but low in fine detail: it does not reliably show early decay between teeth — that is the job of small intraoral films — and it does not provide trustworthy three-dimensional measurements for implant planning or for defining the exact relationship of a root to a nerve, where cone beam imaging is requested instead. It also contains distortion, magnification and overlapping shadows that can be misread if interpreted apart from the clinical examination.
