What is Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)?

Lazy eye, medically called amblyopia, is a condition in which the vision of one eye (or both in fewer cases) weakens even though the eye itself may be structurally healthy. The reason is that the brain, in early childhood when the visual system was still developing, did not receive a clear and correct image from that eye, so it began to rely on the stronger eye and ignore the signals of the weaker eye, so vision did not develop normally in it. Therefore lazy eye is among the most important causes of vision weakness in children, and is treatable if detected early.

There are main causes that prevent a clear image from reaching the brain from one eye, leading to its becoming lazy, foremost: strabismus (eye deviation), where the brain ignores the deviating eye's image to avoid double vision; a large difference in vision power between the eyes (one needing much stronger glasses), so the brain relies on the clearer eye; and sometimes an obstacle blocking vision in one eye such as a congenital cataract or a drooping eyelid. It is sometimes difficult to notice lazy eye in a child because they may not complain, as the stronger eye compensates, so much of it is detected in routine vision screenings.

The most important message in lazy eye is timing, as treatment is very effective when started early in childhood, while the chances of restoring vision decrease the more treatment is delayed after the development of the visual system is complete. Therefore, screening children's vision early is advised, especially with strabismus or a family history. Treatment depends on addressing the cause first (such as prescribing glasses to correct the vision difference, or treating strabismus or removing the obstacle), then stimulating the lazy eye to work, the most famous method of which is patching the healthy eye for specific hours daily to force the brain to use the weaker eye and strengthen its vision, or using drops that temporarily blur the healthy eye's vision. Treatment requires patience and commitment, and the results are often good with early starting and follow-up.
