Colon Spasms: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment
تشنج القولون
Colon spasm describes painful contractions that may accompany bloating or altered bowel habits. Spastic colon is sometimes an older name for IBS, but spasm alone is not a diagnosis.
What is Colon Spasms?
Cramping may reflect altered gut-brain interaction or other causes. Recurrent pain should not automatically be labeled IBS without assessing associated findings.

Symptoms
Intermittent cramps, bloating, gas, diarrhea or constipation can occur. Persistent worsening pain, bleeding or fever should not be dismissed as ordinary spasms.
Causes
Possible causes include IBS, constipation, food intolerance and sometimes inflammation or infection. The symptom pattern and examination guide the assessment.
Risk factors
Stress or particular foods may aggravate symptoms but cannot explain every episode. Family history, medicines and new symptoms help determine appropriate testing.
Diagnosis
Clinicians review links with meals, bowel movements and medicines. Blood or stool tests and endoscopy are selected according to age and warning signs; not everyone needs colonoscopy.
Treatment
Care addresses the cause and may include regular meals, suitable fiber, constipation treatment or selected medicines. Restrictive diets need guidance and review of nutritional adequacy and benefit.
Complications
Pain may disrupt sleep, work and eating. Complications depend on the cause; IBS is not inflammatory colitis and does not itself cause ulceration.
Prevention
Track symptoms and triggers, make gradual changes and maintain regular activity and sleep. Avoid unnecessary food exclusions or prolonged self-treatment with laxatives or antispasmodics.
When to see a doctor
Severe pain with repeated vomiting, distension and inability to pass gas, or bleeding with dizziness, requires urgent care. Weight loss or persistent nighttime symptoms warrants investigation.
