COVID-19: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
كوفيد-19
COVID-19 is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), with symptoms ranging from mild (fever, cough, loss of smell) to severe pneumonia. Vaccines and preventive measures help reduce infection and severity, and treatment is supportive with antivirals for at-risk groups.
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a contagious illness affecting the respiratory system, caused by the novel coronavirus known scientifically as SARS-CoV-2. It emerged in late 2019 and became a global pandemic, and since then many variants have appeared that differ in how fast they spread and their severity.
The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and fine airborne particles when talking, coughing, or sneezing, as well as by touching contaminated surfaces then the face. Severity varies greatly from person to person: most cases are mild to moderate and recover at home, while in older adults and people with chronic illnesses it may progress to pneumonia and low oxygen requiring hospital admission.
Vaccines have fundamentally changed the course of the disease by reducing the risk of severe infection, hospitalization, and death, and the recommendation to take and update them remains important, especially for at-risk groups. Treatment in most cases stays supportive (rest, fluids, fever reducers), with antivirals available given early to high-risk groups. Some patients also experience prolonged symptoms after recovery known as long COVID.
Symptoms
- Fever, dry cough, and fatigue.
- Loss or change of smell and taste.
- Sore throat, nasal congestion, and headache.
- Muscle aches.
- Shortness of breath or low oxygen in severe cases.
Causes
- Infection with SARS-CoV-2 and its variants.
- Spread through droplets, airborne particles, and contaminated surfaces.
- Crowded, poorly ventilated indoor gatherings.
Diagnosis
- A rapid antigen test or PCR test to confirm infection.
- Blood oxygen measurement to assess severity.
- Chest X-ray or CT in severe cases.
Treatment
Mild cases
- Isolation, rest, fluids, and fever reducers, usually recovering at home.
At-risk groups and severe cases
- Antivirals given early to high-risk groups.
- Oxygen and hospital treatment for low oxygen or pneumonia.

Complications
- Pneumonia and low oxygen.
- Blood clots.
- Worsening of chronic illnesses.
- Long COVID with prolonged symptoms after recovery.
Prevention
- Vaccination and updating doses, especially for at-risk groups.
- Good ventilation and handwashing.
- A mask in crowded places when needed.
- Staying home when ill.
When to see a doctor
Go to the emergency department for severe breathlessness, persistent chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, or low oxygen. See a doctor if you are in an at-risk group to assess early treatment. Book an appointment with an internist on ClinicsJo.
