Hyperopia: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

طول النظر

Quick summary

Hyperopia (farsightedness) is a common refractive error in which distant objects are seen more clearly than near ones, because light focuses behind the retina as the eye is shorter than normal. It causes eye strain and headache when reading. It is corrected with glasses, contacts, or laser surgery for suitable adults.

What is Hyperopia?

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is one of the common refractive errors, occurring when the eyeball is shorter than normal or the cornea is less curved, so light entering the eye focuses behind the retina instead of directly on it. As a result, near objects appear unclear, while distance vision remains relatively better.

Hyperopia differs from myopia (in which distant objects appear blurry). Many children are born with a mild degree of farsightedness that improves as the eye grows, and symptoms may not appear because the eye muscles compensate with extra focusing, especially in the young. But with age this ability to compensate decreases, so symptoms appear such as unclear near vision, eye strain, and headache, especially after reading or near work for long periods.

Hyperopia is not a serious disease in most cases and can be easily corrected. Correction relies on prescription glasses (the simplest and most common) or contact lenses, and in suitable adults laser vision-correction surgery may be an option. Checking children's vision is important, because uncorrected hyperopia may affect school performance and may be linked to strabismus or amblyopia (lazy eye) in some cases if not detected and treated early.

Symptoms

  • Unclear vision of near objects.
  • Eye strain and the need to squint to focus.
  • Headache after reading or near work.
  • Eye fatigue in children and difficulty reading.

Causes

  • The eyeball being shorter than normal.
  • Reduced curvature of the cornea or lens.
  • Genetic factors and family history.

Diagnosis

  • Visual-acuity testing and refraction measurement.
  • A full eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
  • Children's vision screening for early detection.

Treatment

Vision correction

  • Prescription glasses, the simplest and most common.
  • Contact lenses.

Surgery

  • Laser vision-correction surgery for suitable adults after the prescription stabilizes.

Complications

  • Eye strain and chronic headache when uncorrected.
  • Strabismus or amblyopia (lazy eye) in untreated children.
  • Affected school performance.

Prevention

  • There is no prevention for the refractive error, but early detection prevents complications.
  • Regular children's vision screening.
  • Taking breaks from near work and good lighting.

When to see a doctor

See an eye doctor for unclear near vision, eye strain, or frequent headaches with reading, or if you notice reading difficulty or a squint in your child. Book an appointment with an ophthalmologist on ClinicsJo.

FAQs about Hyperopia
