Learning Disabilities: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment
صعوبات التعلم
Specific learning difficulties affect skills such as reading, writing or mathematics despite learning opportunities. They do not mean laziness or low intelligence; assessment considers educational and developmental context.
What is Learning Disabilities?
Dyslexia, written-expression difficulties and dyscalculia may occur separately or together. This page concerns specific academic skills, not the use of learning disability to mean intellectual disability.

Symptoms
Persistent slow word reading, spelling difficulties, poorly organized writing or trouble understanding numbers may appear. One low mark or occasional mistake does not establish a disorder.
Causes
Differences in brain information processing and genetic or developmental factors contribute. Hearing, vision and educational problems can also affect performance and must be distinguished or addressed.
Risk factors
Family history, developmental differences and some birth-related factors increase likelihood. Attention disorders can coexist but are distinct and do not explain every learning difficulty.
Diagnosis
Evaluation reviews learning, language and teaching history, age-appropriate skill tests, hearing, vision and attention. Family and school observations matter, alongside teaching language and cultural context.
Treatment
Individual plans use explicit teaching, regular practice, measurable goals and suitable accommodations. Assistive reading or writing tools may help; medication does not treat the learning difficulty itself.
Complications
Without support, academic progress, self-esteem, relationships or mental health may suffer. Education and employment success remain possible with adjustments; support needs can change throughout life.
Prevention
Not all cases can be prevented. Early recognition, effective teaching and supportive home practice reduce impact. Encourage effort and progress without punishment, comparison or labeling a child a failure.
When to see a doctor
Seek assessment for persistent difficulty despite help, school avoidance or marked distress. Sudden loss of previously stable skills needs medical evaluation for other causes.
