What is Pinworm Infection?

Pinworm infection is among the most common intestinal worm infections in the world, especially among school- and nursery-age children. It is caused by a small, thin white worm resembling a thread that lives in the large intestine, and its female emerges at night to the anal area to lay thousands of eggs around the anal opening.

This nighttime behavior is the cause of the infection's most prominent symptom: intense nighttime anal itching that bothers the child and disturbs their sleep. The infection spreads very easily because the eggs are microscopic and sticky: when the child scratches the area, the eggs stick to their fingers and under the nails, then transfer to the mouth directly or through food, toys, surfaces, and clothing, and are swallowed, completing the infection cycle. It therefore spreads quickly among members of one family and children in crowded places.

Despite being widespread and bothersome, pinworms are usually not dangerous and do not cause serious diseases, and the good news is that they are easy to treat. Treatment relies on an anti-worm medication prescribed by the doctor, usually given as a dose repeated after two weeks to eliminate worms hatching from remaining eggs, and treating all family members at the same time is advised to prevent reinfection. Treatment is complemented by strict hygiene: frequent handwashing, nail trimming, washing clothes and bedding in hot water, and avoiding scratching the area. It is important to know that infection does not mean poor hygiene, as it is very common and spreads easily.
