What is Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis?

Objective muscle weakness differs from pain or tiredness alone. Other myositis subtypes and mimicking disorders have different treatment responses.

Symptoms

Climbing stairs, rising from a chair or brushing hair may become difficult. Rash around the eyes or finger joints, swallowing difficulty and breathlessness warrant assessment.

Causes

Immune mechanisms contribute to muscle injury, sometimes alongside other conditions. Medicines, endocrine causes and neurological disorders must be considered before confirming the diagnosis.

Risk factors

Risk varies with subtype, antibodies and age. Similar symptoms in another person do not establish the same diagnosis or justify using their medication.

Diagnosis

Testing may include muscle enzymes, selected antibodies, imaging, electrical studies and sometimes biopsy. Lung assessment and individualized cancer screening depend on subtype, age and risk.

Treatment

Care combines immune-modifying treatment with tailored rehabilitation; selected cases need additional therapies. One regimen cannot be applied to every form of myositis.

Complications

Swallowing problems, poor nutrition, interstitial lung disease and lasting disability may occur. Certain disease patterns are associated with other illnesses requiring targeted investigation.

Prevention

Build activity gradually with professional guidance and protect sun-sensitive skin. Follow medicine-monitoring and appropriate vaccination plans.

When to see a doctor

Breathing difficulty, choking during swallowing or rapidly progressive weakness requires urgent assessment. Declining daily function warrants prompt review even without pain.
