What are stem cells and what distinguishes them from other body cells?

ClinicsJo Editorial Teamاقرأ بالعربية1 view

Stem cells are unique cells in the body distinguished by their ability to develop into many different types of specialized cells. These cells act as the body's natural repair system and differ from other ordinary body cells in three key characteristics:

  • Ability to divide and self-renew: Stem cells can divide and renew themselves for long periods.
  • Non-specialization: Stem cells are unspecialized, meaning they do not perform specific functions in the body immediately.
  • Ability to differentiate: They have the potential to become specialized cells, such as muscle cells, blood cells, or brain cells.

These properties make stem cells a major focus of medical research, as they may contribute to understanding how serious conditions like birth defects and cancer arise, and they may one day be used to create cells and tissues to treat many diseases.

Main Types of Stem Cells

There are main types of stem cells, which are:

  • Embryonic stem cells: These cells are derived from embryos in their early stages and are characterized by their superior ability to differentiate into almost any type of body cell.
  • Adult stem cells: These cells are found in various tissues of the body after birth, such as bone marrow and blood. Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells are more specialized and usually differentiate into specific cell types within the tissue where they are located [1]. For example, stem cells found in bone marrow can develop into different types of blood cells [2].

Current Medical Uses of Stem Cells

Stem cells are already being used in the treatment of some medical conditions, most notably in bone marrow and stem cell transplants. This treatment is an option for people suffering from life-threatening cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma [2]. In these procedures, stem cells are collected from a donor or the person themselves to be used in treatment [2].

Future Hopes for Stem Cells in Medicine

Research into stem cells holds great promise for developing new treatments for many diseases for which there is currently no effective cure. Scientists and doctors are looking forward to using stem cells for:

  • Treating degenerative diseases: Such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord injuries, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis [1].
  • Regenerating damaged tissues: Stem cells may be used to manufacture new cells and tissues to replace damaged tissue in the body.
  • Understanding diseases: Studying stem cells can help understand how complex diseases develop, opening the door to innovative therapeutic strategies [1].

Important Tips and Guidelines

Despite the promising hopes, it is important for patients to be cautious when considering unproven stem cell treatments. You should always consult a specialist physician and seek reliable information about any proposed treatment. Some stem cell treatments may not be safe or effective, and it is essential to ensure that the treatment is approved and supported by strong scientific evidence [1].

If you are considering donating stem cells, they can be collected in two ways: peripheral blood stem cell collection or bone marrow harvesting [2]. The peripheral blood stem cell collection process involves giving injections for 5 days to help stem cells move from the bone marrow into the blood, then blood is collected from one vein, stem cells are separated, and red blood cells are returned to the donor [2]. Bone marrow harvesting is a minor surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, where bone marrow is removed from the back of the pelvic bones [2]. Both procedures carry minimal risks for the donor and do not leave permanent health effects, as the body replaces the donated bone marrow within 4 to 6 weeks [2].
