Using health insurance with general practitioners
Seeing a general practitioner is one of the simplest ways to use health insurance in Jordan, usually needing only your card and a co-payment at network clinics. In many policies, the GP is the starting point from which referrals to specialists are written. Confirming that the clinic is in your network before the visit can save you paying the full consultation yourself.
Often covered
- A visit for common complaints such as colds, fever or general aches is often covered as outpatient care.
- Cleaning, stitching and dressing minor wounds in the clinic are covered by many policies as part of the visit.
- Injections and simple IV fluids prescribed for an acute illness are often included in the visit cover.
- Basic lab tests and prescribed medicines are covered by many policies at network labs and pharmacies.
Often excluded, limited or needing approval
- Medical reports and fitness certificates for work or driving licenses are often excluded from cover.
- Pre-employment checks and routine check-ups without symptoms are not covered by many policies.
- Vitamins, supplements and skin care products are often excluded even if written on the prescription.
- Home visits or after-hours visits may be excluded by many policies or carry a different co-payment.
Check before you book
- Confirm the clinic is in the insurer network for your card class, since an insurer sign at the door may not cover every class.
- Ask whether your policy requires a GP visit first to obtain a referral to a specialist.
- Find out your co-payment for the visit and medicines in advance, and ask about nearby network pharmacies.
- Bring your insurance card and ID, and ask for an itemized invoice and a prescription in your name.
General guidance only: what is covered depends on your policy. Confirm with your insurer.
General information only; it does not replace a medical consultation.
