Oral and Jaw Assessment: Records and Referral Questions

An oral and maxillofacial consultation may follow a dental referral or a concern about the jaws and bite. Its purpose is to clarify the assessment question and who needs to contribute. Bring the referral and relevant records rather than arriving with only a procedure name.

Identify the question behind the referral

Check whether the referral concerns a tooth, oral tissue or the relationship between the jaws. Ask the referring clinician to clarify an unclear letter. Add your own goal, such as chewing or coordinating two treatments, so both the referral and your priorities can be discussed.

Arrange previous records chronologically

Bring dated images, reports and information about earlier orthodontic, restorative or surgical work. Include any active dental plan. The specialist decides whether these records are adequate or additional information is needed. Ask how to transfer original files rather than relying on unclear screenshots.

Understand the scope of the assessment

Bristol Dental Hospital describes assessment of teeth, jaws and bite before planning corrective jaw care. Records may be selected for that purpose. Ask what your examination addresses and which decisions can be made today. A referral alone does not establish a need for surgery.

Clarify who coordinates connected care

If orthodontic or restorative care is involved, ask who coordinates the plan and exchanges reports. Clarify the decision point before another stage starts and whether a joint consultation is needed. Keep the team names and communication sequence together, particularly when clinicians work at different sites.

Verify the setting of proposed procedures

The consultation site may differ from the location of a later procedure. If an intervention is proposed, clarify the facility, team and preparation appointment. Confirm the attending specialist and branch; a directory category does not independently verify a specific surgical service or its equipment.

Document the plan and pending questions

Leave with the assessment summary, outstanding information and each person’s next task. Discuss goals, alternatives and follow-up for any proposed intervention. Request stage-specific fees and the process for sharing a report or seeking another opinion. You should understand the next step even when decisions remain open.

Questions before your appointment

A referral requests assessment or advice. Clarify its question, then discuss findings and relevant options before deciding about an operation.
