Squint Assessment: Observations and Care Sequence
A squint concern may be intermittent, follow a child’s screening or involve a new change in an adult. Bring observations, glasses and reports to frame the assessment. A photograph cannot establish the diagnosis, and the referral does not automatically decide surgery or justify starting online exercises.
Describe when the difference is noticed
Record onset, persistence or situations in which the concern appears, and changes since an earlier report. Select existing dated images without trying to reproduce the finding. Separate the patient’s account from family or school observations; one photograph cannot determine the type or cause.
Bring glasses and previous care plans
Bring current glasses, prescriptions, reports and previous care plans. Explain what was followed and any difficulties without independently restarting or changing old instructions. Include dated surgery or examination records. Confirm age and appointment purpose so child and adult pathways are not assumed to be identical.
Ask what each professional assesses
Sources distinguish eye-movement, vision, optical and medical assessment roles; squint may be intermittent or occur at different ages. Ask who sees you and how findings are combined. A specialty category does not confirm an identical multidisciplinary pathway at every clinic.
Discuss the sequence rather than one procedure
Ask about the goal and order of relevant options. If surgery is discussed, clarify its target, limits, assessing clinician and setting. Do not assume every observation requires an operation or another patient’s result applies to you. Obtain personal optical or care instructions from the responsible team.
Record what will be compared at review
Ask what will be compared later and how to report changes. Keep dated reports and the next visit’s purpose. Clarify fees and handover when services differ. If a child cannot complete a test, ask what was assessed and how the remaining parts can continue.
