What is the relationship between breast implants and cancer?
Implants are associated with a rare lymphoma called BIA-ALCL, reported more often with textured surfaces. This differs from usual breast-tissue cancer. Other rare cancers around the implant capsule have also been reported, so new changes require attention.

Which symptoms matter?
Persistent swelling, late fluid accumulation, a lump or new pain near an implant needs assessment, especially years after surgery. Imaging and fluid or tissue tests may be needed. Appearance alone cannot diagnose cancer.
Should every implant be removed preventively?
The FDA does not recommend routine removal in people without symptoms solely because of BIA-ALCL concern. Discuss the device type, any recall and symptoms with your surgeon; removal also carries risks.
Continue usual breast screening
Implants do not remove the need for screening appropriate to age and risk. Tell the imaging team and keep your device record. Avoid the absolute claim that implants cannot be associated with any cancer.
