A hormonal coil is highly effective contraception when suitable and may reduce heavy periods. Spotting or irregular bleeding can occur during the first months, and rare complications are possible. Contraceptive duration depends on the product and may range from three to eight years.

Choose the product before insertion
The clinician reviews medical history, possible pregnancy, infection and the intended use. Replacement timing can differ by product and indication; contraceptive duration is not necessarily the same as duration for another treatment purpose. A hormonal coil does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Expected changes
Periods may change and spotting can occur during the first three to six months, later becoming lighter or stopping. Persistent or worsening bleeding needs review. Uncommon complications include displacement or expulsion, infection around insertion and perforation of the uterine wall.
If threads cannot be felt
Use additional contraception and contact a professional; emergency contraception may be needed depending on intercourse and timing. Severe lower abdominal pain, fever or a positive pregnancy test needs prompt assessment. Pain with dizziness or one-sided symptoms is especially concerning for a possible ectopic pregnancy.
