Why patches appear
Common forms involve the immune system targeting pigment-producing cells. Vitiligo does not indicate poor hygiene or an infection that can be passed on. Hair in affected areas may also lose colour, and patches can remain stable or enlarge over time.
Is treatment necessary?
Decisions depend on the location, extent and personal impact. A dermatologist may discuss topical treatment, light therapy or camouflage, but responses vary and complete repigmentation cannot be promised. Avoid unprescribed steroid or skin-lightening mixtures.
Skin care and wellbeing
Protect the skin from sunlight and seek support if the appearance affects confidence or relationships. New or uncertain pale patches deserve assessment rather than an assumed diagnosis. Vitiligo itself does not require isolation or separate household utensils.
