Can a nail come off during treatment for nail fungus?
A nail damaged by fungus or injury may detach; that does not automatically mean treatment caused it. Healthy regrowth takes time, and toenails may take a year or longer. Pain or inflammation requires assessment.

Confirm the diagnosis first
Discolouration or thickening can result from fungus, psoriasis or trauma. A clinician may take a nail sample before treatment, particularly before tablets. Not every abnormal nail is a fungal infection.
Recognizing improvement
A clearer strip growing from the nail base may indicate improvement while the older portion remains abnormal until it grows out. Do not extend oral treatment yourself simply because appearance has not normalized quickly. Some oral treatments require interaction checks or liver tests.
When to seek review
Spreading redness, pus or increasing pain needs assessment, with earlier review if you have diabetes or impaired immunity. Do not forcibly pull off a detached nail or share nail tools. Ask how to protect the area and care for regrowth.
