Can microneedling improve acne scars, and what are its risks?

Quick answer

Microneedling may improve some acne scars and wrinkles, with results varying by skin, device and practitioner. It is not suitable for everyone and does not guarantee scar removal. Radiofrequency microneedling has a different risk profile from conventional needling.

Have your skin assessed first

Active infection or inflammation, keloid tendency and medicines affecting bleeding or healing need review. Discuss pigmentation risk, particularly if your skin is prone to it, expected sessions and sun-protection aftercare.

Sterility and added products matter

Use a new needle cartridge for each session as directed for the device, and never share tools. Do not assume adding platelet-rich plasma or another product is automatically safer or better; ask about evidence and the specific device’s authorised use.

Which complications require attention?

Redness or pinpoint bleeding can occur, but burns, severe pain, infection or contour changes need review. The US FDA has reported serious complications with certain RF microneedling uses, including scarring, fat loss and nerve injury. It should not be treated as a simple home procedure.
