Are platelet-rich plasma microneedling facials safe?

Quick answer

PRP microneedling, sometimes called a vampire facial, is not risk-free. Infection, pigment changes and bleeding can occur; unsafe blood handling or equipment can transmit disease. A clean facility alone does not establish personal suitability or the benefit of combining these techniques.

Ask what will actually be done

Who draws and processes the blood, and performs treatment? Are new needles used for every session? Authorisation for a microneedling device does not establish authorisation for combining it with PRP; the FDA has not authorised devices for this delivery use.

Your own blood does not remove infection risk

A US investigation identified likely HIV transmission associated with PRP services at an unlicensed spa. This concerns unsafe practice, not a claim that every facial causes infection.

Discuss risks and symptoms

Disclose blood thinners, herpes and skin or immune conditions. Fever, worsening pain or spreading redness needs review. Suspected contaminated-equipment exposure warrants urgent advice about testing and prevention.
