When can I start yoga and exercise after giving birth?

Quick answer

Return depends on the birth, healing and symptoms, not a universal six-week date. Gentle activity may begin gradually after an uncomplicated birth when you feel able. Caesarean birth or complications require individual advice. Adapted yoga is not a treatment for every postpartum problem.

Build up within comfort

Short walks, breathing exercises and gentle movement can be starting points. Use an instructor familiar with postpartum adaptations and avoid positions that pull on a wound or cause pelvic pressure or pain.

Listen to pelvic-floor symptoms

Vaginal heaviness, urine leakage, pain or increased bleeding during exercise warrants stopping and assessment. Pelvic-floor physiotherapy may be needed; yoga poses do not replace an individual rehabilitation plan.

Recovery includes rest and mental health

Consider nutrition, sleep and support. Exercise is not an obligation to regain a body shape quickly. Persistent severe low mood or disabling anxiety needs help even if activity temporarily improves how you feel.
