Is there a safe daily sitting limit, and how can I reduce sedentary time?

Quick answer

No single daily limit guarantees safety; sitting less than eight hours is not a risk-free threshold. High sedentary time is linked to health risks. Reduce it, add movement throughout the day and maintain activity suited to your ability. Standing alone does not replace movement.

Make practical changes

  • Interrupt long sessions with a brief walk or suitable movement.
  • Use reminders if helpful, without treating a particular interval as a universal medical cutoff.
  • Add safe movement during calls or routine journeys.

Exercise still helps with desk work

Build aerobic activity and strengthening gradually. A workout is valuable but is not a reason to avoid movement for the rest of the day. Preserve adequate sleep rather than replacing it with standing.

Adapt for mobility limitations

Seated activity or guided exercises may be suitable. Falls risk, pain and disability call for individual adjustments rather than an instruction to stand every half hour regardless of circumstances.
