How safe is rhinoplasty, and what should I ask before surgery?

Quick answer

Rhinoplasty has potential benefits and surgical risks. An experienced surgeon cannot guarantee no complications or an exact match to a reference image. Assessment should cover appearance, breathing and general health, with realistic goals, recovery expectations and follow-up plans.

Details

Prepare consultation questions

Ask about qualifications, experience with your situation, the surgical facility and anaesthesia. Report nasal blockage, injuries, previous surgery, smoking and all medicines. Discuss changes that preserve breathing and the possibility of further surgery.

Risks and recovery

Possible problems include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, scars, altered sensation or persistent breathing difficulty. Returning to work is not the final result; swelling and shape may continue changing for months. Do not stop prescribed medicine without a coordinated plan.

After surgery

Obtain written instructions, follow-up dates and a contact number. Heavy bleeding, increasing severe pain, fever or unexpected changes need prompt review; severe breathing difficulty requires emergency care. Do not delay reporting symptoms because they might seem minor.
