How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty, and when should I worry?

Quick answer

Much early swelling settles over weeks, while the final contour can evolve for a year and sometimes longer depending on the procedure and skin. No fixed percentage applies to everyone. Sudden worsening, severe pain or fever needs assessment.

Follow the trend, not daily photographs alone

Swelling can fluctuate and be more noticeable in the morning. Your surgeon assesses progress at follow-up; early appearance cannot establish final symmetry. Report abrupt changes or swelling that worsens instead of gradually improving.

Follow your operation’s instructions

Ask about sleeping, exercise, nasal cleaning, glasses and protection from pressure or injury. Do not independently start massage, taping or medicines for swelling; instructions vary with the bone and cartilage work performed.

When to contact the team promptly

Heavy bleeding, unusual discharge, fever, severe pain or new breathing difficulty needs contact with the surgical team. Severe breathlessness requires emergency help. Other people’s recovery photographs cannot replace assessment of your own nose.
