When might a tummy tuck be an appropriate option?

Quick answer

A tummy tuck may suit some people with excess skin or laxity after pregnancy or major weight change. It is not obesity treatment or necessary for every loose abdomen. Weigh goals, scars, risks, cost and recovery; future pregnancy or weight changes can alter results.

Understand what can change

The operation may remove excess tissue and address abdominal-wall laxity, depending on the plan. It cannot erase every stretch mark or guarantee a photographed appearance. Discuss alternatives, stable weight and future pregnancy.

Recovery varies

Procedure extent, work demands and complications affect timing. Arrange home support and follow wound, lifting and activity instructions. Infection, fluid collections, altered sensation, clots and healing problems can occur.

Make an unpressured decision

Ask for a clear explanation and time to consider it. After surgery, chest pain, breathlessness or a painful swollen leg needs urgent care. Appearance alone does not establish safe recovery.
