Are lifelong vitamins and supplements needed after gastric sleeve surgery?

Quick answer

Lifelong appropriate supplementation and nutritional monitoring are generally needed after a gastric sleeve, even without intestinal bypass. Products and doses depend on surgery, diet and tests. An ordinary multivitamin may be insufficient, and supplements do not replace monitoring.

What should follow-up review?

Bring supplement names and strengths and explain what you tolerate. Iron, calcium, vitamin D, B12 and other nutrients may be included. Formulations, timing and doses vary, particularly during pregnancy or with anaemia; do not copy someone else’s plan.

Check before symptoms appear

Deficiencies can develop without obvious symptoms. After initial follow-up, nutritional assessment and blood tests are generally needed at least annually according to the care protocol, and sooner with deficiencies or symptoms.

Repeated vomiting is not normal

Vomiting, swallowing difficulty or poor intake needs prompt assessment and can increase thiamine-deficiency risk. Confusion or difficulty walking alongside these problems needs urgent care. Do not wait for routine tests or manage this with a supplement alone.
